DEBRA HOYT
My Mom was in the early stages of Alzheimer's. She had begun a painting of a kangaroo but was losing her dexterity, and she said, "Deb, you finish this" and handed me the brush. That marked the beginning of what has now become a passion and career.
About Us: Questions and Answers
What is LindenBrook Shoppe?
LindenBrook Shoppe is where my art comes to life. Every piece you see here is created by me—whether it’s a painting or a photograph transformed into a print. This shop is my way of showcasing my work to the community, offering a tangible connection to my art. Before opening this space, I focused on commissions and pop-ups at the Fresh Market. Having a permanent shop allows me to share the breadth of my work beyond what can be captured online.
Why did you start this business instead of just doing commissions?
I love sharing my art in person. There’s something deeply fulfilling about meeting people, connecting with the community, and seeing the joy my work brings to others. It’s more than a business; it’s about the relationships and the shared happiness that this shop fosters.
What are some key moments in your journey?
Art has always been part of my life. My mom, also an artist, played a pivotal role in my journey. After my father passed, she traveled between my siblings and me, painting as she went. One day, she asked me to finish a kangaroo painting she had started but could no longer complete. When I told her I didn’t know how to paint, she simply said, "Try." That moment, about six years ago, changed everything.
Before that, I was a photographer, which now complements my work beautifully. The skills I developed help me digitize my paintings, turning them into prints, tea towels, and more. Everything I’ve done—nursing, photography, even managing government contracts—has led me to this fulfilling chapter of blending art with community.
What drives you?
Painting is my passion, and I simply can’t stop. Even if no one bought my work, I’d still be creating. The best feedback I hear is when people say, "This is such a happy place." That’s exactly what I want—to share my joy with others and create a space that feels uplifting and inspiring.
What’s a major obstacle you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Keeping the shop stocked properly has been a learning experience. Striking the balance between offering variety and maintaining an inviting, uncluttered space takes careful planning. But painting constantly helps me keep things fresh and engaging.
Are there any community projects you’re passionate about?
Absolutely. I’m deeply involved in my church, LifePoint, and I donate a portrait each year to Feed the Need, a program with the Hershey Food Bank. I also contribute to two other charities annually. Giving back is a core part of what I do.
Do you have a favorite quote?
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." (1 Peter 5:5-7) This verse grounds and inspires me daily.
What’s something people might not guess about you?
I used to be a registered nurse and worked in the operating room. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which reflects my background of caring for others—a trait that I carry into everything I do.
